HHS has created a template for compliance plans, which can be found at www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp. The compliance plan asks for a brief summary of how an organization will become HIPAA compliant during the extra year. An extension is automatic for organizations that follow directions and submit a proper plan, either online or on paper. Also available online is a document answering frequently asked questions at http://aspe.hhs.gov/admnsimp. The extension pertains only to the transactions rule. The privacy rule's compliance date remains April 14, 2003.
